Summary: Poetry and the Cultivation of Community. In this two-hour workshop, we will write and share the ways in which poetry can help support our personal efforts to create and sustain connections with others and look at how cultivating community can deepen a personal writing practice.  We will:

  • Reflect on what community means to each of us
  • Gain insight and inspiration from contemporary literature and local writers
  • Write in response to prompts on community

Venue: The Global Education Center is a nonprofit arts education center for students, teachers and the community in the area of multicultural, anti-bias education. Using the arts as a pathway to understanding the various cultural, ethnic and religious groups residing in our community, the Center’s staff and teaching and performing artists present ongoing classes, workshops, lecture-demonstrations and performances to promote cross-cultural understanding and respect.

Thandiwe Shiphrahis a poetry-inspired teaching and performing artist, arts advocate, and literary arts program consultant. Her focus over the past 20 years has been on creating and contributing to projects that use the arts – particularly poetry – to build healthy and harmonious communities. This has been accomplished primarily through readings and performances of her own writings and through her Nashville-based consulting practice, which works in collaboration with regional and national non-profits to design and implement community arts programs and special events.;

Diana Morningstar

Diana Morningstar is a longtime community organizer, activist and artist who has served on the boards & staff of many church and community non-profit organizations, locally, regionally, and nationally and has a passion for community-building across lines of race, class and culture. After 8 years of leadership in the forms of InterPlay, she is currently designing MorningStar Community Arts, linking arts and social transformation, writing, and performing. She’s written poetry all along the journey and is currently publishing an extensive collection.
